How can mediation help resolve my divorce?

On Behalf of | Jan 13, 2020 | Divorce, Mediated Divorce

Finding your Michigan marriage ending in divorce can be emotionally draining, mentally exhausting and very expensive. Mediation can help you and your spouse come to terms with a variety of issues outside of the courtroom. While mediation is not for every divorcing couple, it may help you resolve some of the issues in your divorce.

Family Lawyer Magazine recommends mediation for your divorce because of the many advantages. If you have children together, a mediator helps both of you look toward the future and focus on the well-being of your children rather than past experiences. When both parties can come to an agreement on parenting time, you are both likely to adhere to it.

You may spend less money on your divorce if you use mediation than if you do not. This is because mediation provides another perspective that is neutral to both parties. Mediation focuses on respecting each other which can be difficult when emotions are high.  Resolving disputes with respect can help the experience be more positive for both you and your spouse.

The advantages extend well beyond the final decision of your divorce. Couples who go through mediation are more likely to handle conflict better following the divorce, which can be a huge benefit when there are children. Effective communication helps you come to an agreement on asset, debt and property division without the long, often drawn-out process of hashing it out in court.

Mediation does not work in all divorces, but it is worth discussing with your attorney. This information is intended only to educate and should not be interpreted as legal advice.
