What can a mediator do for you?

On Behalf of | Dec 19, 2019 | Divorce

Couples in Michigan who decide to get a divorce may also be considering a non-contested divorce, or a divorce that does not rely on traditional means of litigation.

There are many different ways that you can get to a divorce that does not involve a court battle. You can also employ the use of many tools, tactics and aids such as the use of divorce mediators to help you achieve that goal.

What mediators can do

A mediator’s goal in a divorce is to act as a bridge between parties. They are there to make sure that you are both communicating your ideas and feelings clearly, that you are listening to each other, and that both parties are given enough time to talk and be heard.

Mediators also help to deescalate situations when necessary, including when there are arguments between you and your spouse. This ensures that all conversations are as productive as possible. Not only that, but they also provide a unique perspective as an unrelated third party, which allows them to give advice and care for both parties without intense emotional attachment that the spouses themselves will experience.

What mediators cannot do

There are naturally many misconceptions about the role a mediator may play in a divorce, as well. For example, some people see the word “mediate” and immediately think of counseling. However, divorce mediators are not here to help you and your spouse work through your marital troubles with the goal of trying to help you repair your relationship. They are only there to mediate the divorce itself, ensuring that all parties get what they are after.

Mediators can be a valuable tool in any divorce. If utilized correctly, it can be possible to employ the use of mediation in your own divorce in order to avoid the struggles associated with taking your divorce into the courtrooms.
